You know the expression: Flattery will get you anywhere - which may have moved these cookies up a spot on our list. Well, actually, they’re imprinted with motivational expressions like, “I am a Leader,” or, “I am Gutsy,” which are just the kind of affirmations I now crave from my baked goods. These tart and bright Girl Scout cookies have your name on them. Lemon-Ups, a variety of Girl Scout Cookies, are crispy, citrusy cookies with inspiring messages baked into them. They’re worth planning a tea party around. Trefoils are probably the closest thing in the lineup today to the original Girl Scout Cookie, which was a simple sugar cookie baked with butter, sugar, milk, flour, vanilla and a touch of baking soda. Pinkies up! These melt-in-your-mouth shortbread cookies are a classic and pair perfectly with a cup of tea. However, the gluten-free buttery cookies have little sticky-sweet bits of toffee sprinkled into them which give each crumbly bite a great flavor and a nice chew. These Toffee-tastics Girl Scout cookies aren’t as chewy as this elder millennial cookie critic would hope. Maybe I have the dessert palate of a grandma, but I love all things in the butterscotch/toffee family including, but not limited to, Werther’s Originals, butter pecan ice cream and sticky toffee pudding. Plus, it’s hard for oatmeal and peanut butter to compete against the dessert world’s power couple: peanut butter and chocolate, which join forces in the Tagalongs. With just a skimpy strip of peanut butter layered between two crunchy oatmeal sandwich cookies, Dos-si-dos taste a tad dry. There’s nothing academic whatsoever about my rankings, but, after leaving boxes of cookies out on my kitchen counters for the taking (and having lots of dessert-loving friends over in the past several days), it is my formal observation that there remains hardly a dent in the box of Dos-si-dos. I bet this cookie would be delectable if its raspberry filling was more jammy. Let’s just say I wasn’t tempted to devour an entire sleeve of Raspberry Rallys like I am with every box of Thin Mints. But the interior's raspberry flavoring tasted artificial to me in a way that the mint version doesn’t - and I found the chocolate coating to be a little waxy. Just like its predecessor, these feature wafers dipped in a chocolate coating. It's been advertised as the “sister cookie” to the ever-popular Thin Mint - which may have put it at a disadvantage right out of the gate. I had high hopes for the newest cookie, Raspberry Rally. The Scouts also released a new cookie this year: Raspberry Rally, which is available through online orders only, providing our favorite young entrepreneurs with a real-life lesson in e-commerce. Cookie selections may vary depending on where you’re located in the state, and Texas happens to have some of the least expensive boxes in the supply chain. Girl Scout Cookie flavors run the gamut, from treats for peanut butter lovers to a gluten-free toffee option to beloved classics like Thin Mints, Samoas and Tagalongs. It's that wonderful time of year where the Girl Scouts roam the streets, selling sweet treats, while the rest of us stock up on our annual allotment of Girl Scout cookies and somehow make the entire stack of boxes disappear before anyone stops by for a visit.
